In 1987 he moved to the grade two Cullybackey Caledonia Pipe Band, under the leadership of Graham Lamont.  In the winter of 1994, he joined Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band where he has played until stepping back from band duties in June 2024.  During his almost 30 years in FMM Jonathan has won multiple awards, including the Grade 1 World Pipe Band Championships 11 times.

His interest in Piobaireachd started in the early 1990’s when he went to the Northern Ireland Piping and Drumming School Piobaireachd classes, initially taught by John Wilson and subsequently Andrew Wright.

In 2001 he started travelling across to Scotland to take lessons from Robert Wallace at the then College of Piping.  In 2011 he moved to Scotland and started travelling every other week to Dunblane to take lessons from Andrew Wright, a weekly ritual that often used to run into the small hours of the morning and ended with Andy’s wife interrupting to let them know it was 12.30 am!

Jonathan has won numerous awards for Piobaireachd playing, including the Dunvegan Medal and the Braemar Gold Medal.

Jonathan is an accountant and lives in Glasgow.
